About the INCOSE® Michigan Chapter

The Michigan Chapter is one of the most diverse in the world with approximately 140 members associated with over two dozen organizations.  Most of our members are affiliated with one of the many major automotive, aerospace, defense, energy, medical device, healthcare, consumer goods or information technology companies operating in Michigan.  Other members represent the growing entrepreneurial start-up movement which has taken root in the state.  Still others are affiliated with major Michigan universities and some government agencies.

Our primary goal at this time is to support and increase Michigan INCOSE® membership by establishing the Chapter as a leading force in creating a highly dynamic and innovative systems engineering community within the State of Michigan.

Mission Statement

The INCOSE® Michigan Chapter strives to foster a world-class systems engineering environment for it's current and future membership.

It is our belief that systems engineering principles and practices offer the best solution for Michigan organizations struggling to compete in today's global marketplace, and that the proper application of systems engineering can directly contribute to the overall betterment of the social, economic and environmental condition of the state.  When the aim is to improve cost, quality and schedule performance -- whether in industry, government or education -- it is our conviction that systems engineering provides the most viable organized approach for doing so.


  1. Improve the systems engineering work environment for our members by educating business leaders and corporate middle management regarding the business case and the key success factors for systems engineering projects.
  2. Improve the performance of systems engineering teams by encouraging INCOSE® members to take advantage of INCOSE® resources (e.g., the SE Handbook, SE Certification, etc.).
  3. Promote the benefits of systems engineering and INCOSE® in general while establishing liaisons and synergistic partnerships with key institutions, organizations and individuals.

Michigan Chapter Leadership

The Michigan Chapter of INCOSE is governed by a volunteer leadership team that works to meet the needs of members while advancing the practice of systems engineering.

Nathan VinarcikNathan Vinarcik is a junior studying mechanical engineering at the University of Detroit Mercy.  He graduated from the University of Detroit Jesuit High School in 2018 and was involved with FIRST Robotics as the Vice-President of Image and Spirit.  He is an Eagle Scout with 6 palms and was the first Scout in Michigan to receive the Thomas A. Edison Supernova Award, Scouting’s highest STEM honor.  He was elected by his peers into the Order of the Arrow (the Boy Scouts honor society recognizing cheerful service).  He has obtained the Brotherhood Membership and has served as Migisi-Opawgan’s chapter secretary.  Nathan was recognized with an honorable mention in the NASA MBSE Habitat Library Challenge.  As a student INCOSE member he was recognized with the 2020 Student Achievement Award.

Curtis Potterveld

Curtis Potterveld has 18 years experience in systems engineering for Aerospace and Defense systems. Working for Boeing he has worked on satellites, the International Space Station, other manned space vehicles systems, and the FA-18 fighter. He has developed and deployed MBSE processes, tools, and training across Boeing programs. Curtis has worked on systems and safety analysis for the Ford Motor Corporation on the autonomous vehicle project and General Motors driver assistance programs. He has served as treasurer for the Michigan INCOSE chapter and the INCOSE Great Lakes Regional Conference. Curtis has a MS in Systems Engineering from Stevens, a MS in Aerospace Engineering and Arizona State University, and a MS in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Robin MikolaRobin Mikola has been re-elected President of INCOSE Michigan in 2022 after serving in 2019 and 2021 as Vice President as well as President in 2020.  She has a decade of experience in complex System Architecture and Design for platform rotary wing systems architecture, design and deployment in the defense sector as a subject matter expert and integrated product team lead. She also has close to a decade of experience in global corporate process design, development as well as tool development and deployment for large scale vertically integrated companies in order to meet the future requirements for digital engineering and quality in the Automotive Sector.  Robin has an accomplished history of bringing new products to market as a product lead in the Defense, Automotive and Engineering Tools sectors.  She is a certified provisional ASPICE assessor with a history of coaching and auditing product teams to meet their goals in record time.  Robin received her BS EE at Michigan Technological University.
