Abstract:
The use of renewable energy sources to provide electricity is discussed in two forms: Under-sea turbines and above ground turbines. Known as ‘Hydro’ and ‘Wind’ respectively, the two types of Power Systems make use of free two-per-day tides and free, albeit less predictable, air currents. System construction, operation, array planning, and power calculations, and the differences between, are presented.
How much energy is represented in tides vs wind? How efficient is each type turbine? As the systems are defined and these questions answered, the idea of “which is better” appears to lie in the “where”; that is, location may dictate which is more practical (able to monitor, repair, replace), and cost efficient. The impact of change to well established power grids and therefore reluctance to “re-invent” is also deserving of prudent consideration.
The advantages, limitations, and disadvantages of each system are detailed including location maps for actual projects, progress, costs, turbine assembly variances. The multi-turbine arrays or field patterns and the grid to land to power distribution station to serviced buildings brings our discussion to the larger system of systems.
Presenter:
Linda Britt is an Electrical and Systems Engineer, graduate of Drexel University; her career encompasses full lifecycle contributions, design of receiver/jammer signal processing circuitry, program and engineering management for RCA, GE, NGC, among other companies. She has 25 years experience in defense and commercial electronics systems, including Navy radar, broadcast, laser, design for manufacturability and sustainability, and has been champion for design review professionalism and standardization. Serving on the Board of Directors for INCOSE Orlando Chapter since 2010, Linda was 2012 INCOSE Orlando chapter president. Her publications include ‘
