Abstract:
Our
11 April INCOSE meeting will be very different, and very interesting.
As systems engineers, we are often working to find better ways to pull all sorts of machines, components, subsystems, and sophisticated computers together to create and sustain a system useful to its purpose. The complexity of fielded systems gets greater each year and we are called upon more and more to incorporate people into these sprawling and un-deterministic systems.
On
11 April we will participate in a Crawford Slip Method (CSM) workshop which will exercise your brain in a way you have not experienced before, but will give you new insights into complex systems. Dr. C. C. Crawford invented the CSM during WWII to boost weapons production in the U.S. The CSM is brain-storming stripped down to the basics. (There were few fancy thought-gathering materials or machines back then.) Dr. Crawford successfully presided over workshops of tens or hundreds or thousands of diverse factory workers, instructing them to write their inputs on small slips of paper using ball point pens.
In 1984, Charlie Vono was trained by Dr. C.C. Crawford in this technique and has led numerous CSM workshops since.
So, take advantage of this chance to experience handling thoughts as if they were physical objects, engaging your mental low gear, and other tools that will help you think differently in the future about thinking itself.
Professional Biography:
Charlie Vono is a retired USAF colonel and retired TRW/Northrop Grumman senior manager. He earned his Astronautical Engineering BS from the USAF Academy in 1976 and then was aircraft commander on the KC-135Q tankers that supported the world-wide recon mission of the fastest aircraft ever built, the SR-71. After a second assignment as Software Systems Chief for the USAF’s Inertial Upper Stage (a sophisticated booster for our sophisticated NRO recon satellites) and earning an MS in Systems Management, Charlie joined TRW where he spent 30 years as a systems engineer sustaining ICBMs. Assignments as a USAF Reservist include: writing the first Hill AFB Quality Plan, F-16 Structural Engineer, and a position on the joint staff at Pacific Command. In retirement, Charlie writes and speaks about his exciting and interesting career and spreads the word on the best approaches to sustaining complex systems.
