About the Presentation:
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a popular topic of technology lately. There are many talks on what AI can do now, what it will do in the near future, and its impact on society. Sometimes the stories paint such a bleak picture that it seems that AI could end human existence. These stories come from well-known technologists such as Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and Stephen Hawking. Other AI experts such as Jeff Hawkins, Andrew Ng, and Yan LeCun try to reign in the fear by saying that we are far from such an apocalyptic state. What is the true state of AI? What is the hype? What is artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) anyway? Will a machine ever become sentient? This talk will explain what AI and ML are and how we proceed to achieve it. This talk will discuss the technology objectively to let the audience draw their own conclusions.

Dr. Mark Silbert
About the Speaker:
Dr. Mark Silbert is a data fusion engineer and subject matter expert (SME) with AM Pierce & Associates. He previously worked for NAVAIR in Patuxent River, MD for 37 years before retiring from the Government. During the first 17 years of his career, Dr. Silbert worked on developing decision aiding systems using artificial intelligence technology. Dr. Silbert then transitioned to data fusion efforts for the remainder of his career at NAVAIR as the DoD transitioned their focus as well. He was a Fellow and SME at NAVAIR for his expertise in data fusion technologies. Dr. Silbert’s career was split between research and development (R&D) and working for program offices. He was the data fusion lead for most of the Navy’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platforms, including Triton, F-35, E-2, and P-8. Dr. Silbert’s R&D efforts have focused on information fusion, decision-aiding, and artificial intelligence. Dr. Silbert is currently the data fusion lead for the MQ-25 program and he continues to provide technical support to the Data Fusion Branch at NAVAIR. He has authored and co-authored several technical publications related to this work. He also recently taught the artificial intelligence course for St. Mary’s College and was a guest lecturer on the subject at University of Maryland. He has also served on national data fusion organizations and has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in artificial intelligence, computer science, mathematics, and statistics. Dr. Silbert has a Ph.D. in systems engineering from George Washington University. He has a M.S. degree in computer science from Rutgers University and a B.S. degree in computer science from Drexel University.
