Press Release Academic Equivalency - Stevens Institute

SAN– DIEGO (27 October 2023) – The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) is excited to announce that Stevens Institute of Technology has had courses approved as equivalent to the certification knowledge exam, satisfying one of the requirements toward Associate Systems Engineering Professional (ASEP) and Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) certification.

Students who do well in university courses which have been assessed to have Academic Equivalence (AcEq) are allowed to bypass the certification knowledge exam when applying for ASEP and CSEP Certification. The assessments they complete through their coursework have been recognized by the INCOSE Certification Program’s volunteer reviewers as an equivalent alternative to the standardized test developed by INCOSE.

Interim Dean Tony Barrese, PhD, School of Systems and Enterprises of Stevens Institute of Technology stated, “The opportunity for students to secure an ASEP or CSEP qualification, in addition to their degree, adds an industry credential dimension to the value of completing their programs.”

Professor Mo Mansouri, Director for Systems Engineering Programs, School of Systems and Enterprises of Stevens Institute of Technology commented, “Systems Engineering has a practical impact in a variety of industries. Our students have always been critically involved with industry. By acquiring INCOSE academic equivalency for our courses, our students will be eligible for ASEP and CSEP, qualifications they well deserve. This creates a great opportunity and professional advantage for our current and future students.”

A growing number of highly respected universities like Stevens Institute of Technology are using the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook as a reference in their coursework and are being recognized with Academic Equivalency. This will benefit the global systems engineering community by establishing a baseline of common knowledge that can be translated and applied in a variety of domains and communities.”

Members of INCOSE’s Academic Council are eligible to offer Academic Equivalency upon recognition by the INCOSE Certification Program. Candidates who apply through AcEq must still meet all other INCOSE certification requirements, including individual membership and payment of application fees.

Any university wishing to participate in this program needs to be a member of the INCOSE Corporate Advisory Board (CAB) or the local INCOSE chapter equivalent. There are no additional fees associated with securing Academic Equivalence for CAB members. Universities that are members of local chapter affiliates have a low-cost path to participate in the Academic Equivalency program.
