Human-Systems Integration: Mapping Pilot Cognition with Aircraft Dynamics

About the Presentation:
Loss of Control (LOC) in aviation is an area of extensive study with respect to definition, prevention, and mitigation. A previous study in flight test shows that flap configuration changes can have a large consequence on aircraft longitudinal trim, inducing LOC. This talk presents a new approach that focuses on developing a flight test method to map pilot cognition with aircraft dynamics, adding the human component to the analysis. The new method implements cognitive engineering mapping tools like the critical decision method (CDM) and cognitive flow analysis (CFA). The integration of the various results is compiled into a series of observation-decision-action (ODA) cognitive patterns, aligned with different cognitive functions and processes. The experiments are conducted in a virtual reality environment. The results show that this new method for cognitive mapping yields different results as compared to traditional knowledge elicitation sessions. Moreover, emerging properties appear as the VR experience provides a highly realistic scenario. The test also demonstrates the need for human-systems integration efforts in the field of augmented reality visuals (wearables/glasses) for pilots.
About our Presenter:
Tiziano Bernard is a Ph.D. candidate in Human-Centered Design and a research assistant at Florida Institute of Technology’s College of Engineering and Science. He was the first graduate from Florida Tech with a Master's degree in Flight Test Engineering (2016). Mr. Bernard's field of study is Loss of Control (LOC) in aviation. In December 2017, he received the Medal of the Government of Trieste, Italy from the Mayor for “obtaining brilliant results and for the strong passion which as always guided and continues to characterize his efforts in the aerospace domain.” His doctoral research, advised by Dr. Lucas Stephane, focuses on mapping pilot cognition with aircraft dynamics during critical phases of flight.
