Welcome to the Bay Area Northern California International Council on

Systems Engineering Web Site

Supporting Systems Theory and Systems Engineering excellence for Industry, Academia, and INCOSE members.

The chapter covers a leading, dynamic, and exciting technology development area in the entire world, from Silicon Valley to Sacramento, to the 680 Tech Corridor/East Bay, to Monterey, San Luis Obispo and North to the Oregon border

Technology and systems engineering excellence ranges from the Stanford Linear Accelerator, Machine Learning, Biopharmaceuticals, Autonomous and electric transport, world leadership in renewable and sustainable energy, geo engineering, space access/micro satellites, agriculture feeding large parts of the world, wine,  to entertainment and gaming.

While these industries vary greatly, they build and work with systems. Systems Engineering integrates disparate specific engineering disciplines into the overall system for safe, reliable, and robust products that perform to requirements and design.

November 2018 Meeting

San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California Chapter continues momentum to reboot the chapter to its full potential. We met on November 14th 2018 at one of the many venues in San Francisco that are near public transportation. We will form some working groups and use the energy and interest of ten to twenty members who are interested in helping.

Seated from bottom left clockwise are Clark Ince, IEEE and Chapter Treasurer, Andrew Wiedlea, Lawrence Berkeley Lab and Chapter President, new member Set Crawford and his wife Kym, Michael Ayres at Mace & Associates and Chapter Vice President, Scott Workington, and Dick Smith.

We are working on a number of themes for upcoming technical sessions, the first of which will be in January. If anyone is interested in helping organize these, or has ties to interesting speakers or sources, please let us know!

The future of transportation in the Bay Area -- many thanks to Bradley Banks/Parsons for helping develop this topic!

System Engineering and disciplinary activity in China/elsewhere -- how do practices differ between the US and elsewhere in our global community?

Next generation system engineering tools: machine learning, new data analytic toolsets, and machine learning offer the potential for new ways of managing design complexity?  What are the exciting trends and who is developing the tools that will drive our disciplinary practices forward?

Some interesting SE resources

Integrating Program Management and Systems Engineering, Rebentisch, 2017. interesting focus on how program management and SE married, and the importance of doing both well as part of project performance.

Army of None: Autonomous Weapons and the Future of War, Paul Scharre.  Interesting and scary!
