INCOSE-LA Chapter Speaker Meeting: Conflict, Listening and Negotiation in the Systems Engineering Workplace

Register here! (Remote participation available. Contact info at this link)

Topic: Conflict, Listening and Negotiation in the Systems Engineering Workplace

Abstract: Conflict is often viewed as a bad thing from a team or organizational perspective. While it is true that unmanaged (or poorly managed) conflict can inflict a great deal of damage in the workplace, well-managed conflict can play an important role in, or even be the driver of, innovation. In this program you will hear a trained hostage negotiator, mediator and labor/management facilitator discuss the value of well-managed conflict and the use of tools such as active listening, interest-based problem solving and negotiation – a competency that the INCOSE Competency Model calls “essential” to requirements management, verification and validation, and acquisition and supply.

Speaker:  Zane Scott is a veteran of 18 years in the courtroom where he tried over 100 jury trials. He has presented live and virtually in a variety of settings, ranging from the courtroom to the classroom. Trained as a hostage/crisis negotiator, mediator and labor-management facilitator, he has taught communication, negotiation and facilitation skills in a variety of government and commercial venues. As VP for Professional Services for Vitech and an Associate Systems Engineering Professional (ASEP), Zane understands the world of systems engineering and the role of these soft-skills in it. He has served as the Chair of the INCOSE Corporate Advisory Board and as a member of the INCOSE Board of Directors. A member of INCOSE’s Chesapeake Chapter, he is a frequent teacher, speaker and blogger on a wide variety of systems engineering and soft skills topics. He has a B.A. in Economics from Virginia Tech and a J.D. from the University of Tennessee Law School.

The Southern Maryland Chapter of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) began in February 1998.  The core group of organizers recognized the sizable Systems Engineering infrastructure  in the Patuxent River area created by the presence of the Naval Air Systems Command, the Naval Air Warfare Center (Aircraft Division and Field Activity at St. Indigos), the Naval Air Station, and a growing community of Industry partners.
