Welcome to the Southern Maryland Chapter

Founded in February, 1998, the Southern Maryland Chapter follows the INCOSE International Mission, Vision and Goals.

Additionally, we will:

  • Continue our outreach program to support systems engineering conferences and events at both the Regional and International levels of INCOSE
  • Continue to build partnerships with local professional associations offering unique and diverse systems engineering insights while complimenting their inherent interest areas

INCOSE/GfSE Webinar 3: Model-based Systems Engineering Demystified

Professor Jon Holt will discuss how there is nothing inherently wrong with a document-based approach to Systems Engineering, but based on the evolution of complexity, how we must ensure that our Systems Engineering practice and techniques must be up to the job of coping with this complexity.

 Abstract

In this first of three webinar presentations, Jon will discuss the underlying reasons why MBSE is so important for any modern-day Systems Engineering project. He will provide an in-depth discussion on complexity and how it has not just increased but has evolved over the last few decades. Using a simple example, Jon will discuss four areas in which complexity has evolved, namely: system elements and their associated interfaces; system constraints; systems of systems; and how complexity has shifted.

As the complexity of these Systems evolves over time, so must the approaches that we apply to realize our Systems successfully. Based on this, Jon will discuss how there is nothing inherently wrong with a document-based approach to Systems Engineering, but based on the evolution of complexity, how we must ensure that our Systems Engineering practice and techniques must be up to the job of coping with this complexity.

Also, Jon will introduce the now-infamous Brontosaurus of Complexity that helps us to understand how complexity changes over the course of a project and he will conclude with an overview of his latest books that tackle this subject.

Take-Away Key Messages

  • Areas of evolved complexity, systems of systems, system elements, their associated interfaces, and constraints
  • The “Brontosaurus of Complexity” and how complexity feeds into evils
How to ensure that Systems Engineering practice and techniques are up to the job coping with evolved complexity.

The Southern Maryland Chapter of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) began in February 1998.  The core group of organizers recognized the sizable Systems Engineering infrastructure  in the Patuxent River area created by the presence of the Naval Air Systems Command, the Naval Air Warfare Center (Aircraft Division and Field Activity at St. Indigos), the Naval Air Station, and a growing community of Industry partners.
