Can Complex Adaptive System Models Aid Team Development?
Systems Engineering & Project Team Leaders,
I am seeking your assistance to help gather survey data in support my master’s thesis regarding various system modeling techniques that might aid in the development of project teams. This research is being conducted in association with the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD.
As many of you are already aware, project team development can have a significant impact on project success; particularly in areas such as team resilience and adaptability. My thesis objective is to evaluate the potential benefits that might be realized by applying a specific group of Complex Adaptive System (CAS) modeling techniques to the development of project teams. As team leaders, your extensive knowledge of and experience with project team interactions qualifies you to provide an accurate assessment of the possible benefits these models may provide as viewed from the perspective of field practitioners.
Your participation can help validate whether these models hold potential for use in working environments and can focus efforts on continued research into these and other techniques that may benefit future project team leaders.
This multiple-choice survey does not collect any personal information or ask you to provide information regarding any of your personal or work behavior/practices. It simply asks you to evaluate the possible benefits that these modeling techniques may possess. Your responses are confidential and will only be used for research purposes. The amount of time to complete the survey will vary depending on each survey participant, however, the estimate is approximately 30 minutes.

How do diversity and inclusion impact safety in complex systems?
We invite safety professionals in all sectors and disciplines globally to have their say. The University of York is undertaking a short global study on how diversity and inclusion impacts on safety in complex systems. You can help the team better understand this issue by completing an online survey. This is part of the Safer Complex Systems programme coordinated by Engineering X, a new international collaboration founded by the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Lloyd’s Register Foundation. - The research is being led by the University of York and is feeding into the Safer Complex Systems programme, which aims to enhance safety and resilience in complex systems globally to allow them to deal with future shocks of a similar scale to COVID-19.
- The survey asks safety professionals to reflect on their protected characteristics in the context of the inclusivity of their working environment(s) and to give their opinion on whether each protected characteristic has influenced (positively or negatively) their ability to carry out your work effectively as a safety engineer or safety manager (for example their ability to raise concerns about safety).
- This D&I survey is aimed at anyone who works in the safety field, particularly safety engineers and those working in safety management.
- It would be brilliant to hear from safety professionals across a range of sectors and disciplines globally.

Systems Frameworks and the Definition of Disruptive Ideas

Critical Failure Factors survey
Dear Systems Engineering practitioner,
Throughout our experiences in system development, we have seen many successes and failures. Often, it is through the failures that we have our most profound learning. And this is why a Critical Failure Factor Survey has been designed as part of the capstone project of the Technical Leader Institute of INCOSE (TLI Cohort 3).
Our goal in this survey is to identify what are the most Critical Failure Factors within the execution of development projects that have led to your greatest learnings. With your input, we will be able to build upon our experiences and learnings to develop a more robust understanding of the things that are most likely to cause others to struggle in their development projects. With this, we will be able to share this experiential information with you and with others to prepare them for identifying these cause as they happen and to provide them with tools to help mitigate and recover from the causes should they occur. It is only through your participation that we can develop robust data to build upon. Please, help us make a difference to those that have yet to have our experiences. Help us prepare our future Technical Leaders to advance even faster as the world we live in continues to evolve ever faster.
